Pastoral and Religious Responses to 'Ten Questions':

Steven,

New Hope was founded 21 years ago in Sacramento at a home bible study. Most of its elders are a product of the Jesus Movement of the late sixties and early seventies. We have five elders, three of them on staff functioning in various rolls, Doug Shearer is the founder and oversees our marriage ministry, and home fellowships, Victor Styrsky, oversees our worship ministry and youth ministry. Two recent additions to our eldership are Jerry Helmaen and Al Skinner, Jerry has a teaching gift, Al a gift in administration.

We are pretty middle of the road in our Sunday service, Worship and the Word. Our Wednesday evening meeting is more charismatic. We are strong on doctrinal purity and bring in many fine guest teachers. I would say about three quarters of the fellowship consist of mature believers, in the last couple of years we have added many new brethren to the fellowship, many come to us with problems, drugs, porno, bad marriages, etc. and we do the best we can to see them restored to Christ.

I will answer your questions below.

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible? (Absolutely, every meeting)

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? (We teach and preach Jesus is the only way and he is our Lord)

3. Do you currently have a men’s bible study that meets once a week? (we have a men's ministry that meets each week, once a month they have a pot luck)

4. Do you publicly preach out on the streets on a regular basis?

(Doug and I co-founded SOS San Francisco 24 years ago, it is the oldest ongoing street ministry in the USA) Yes, we preach the gospel (on the streets of Jerusalem to, we have most our missionaries in Israel)

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ? (Yes again, this year at New Hope is called "The year of Proclamation" and we have had some great ourreaches)

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel? (every saint should be equipped to minister the gospel of reconciliation)

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who ‘evangelists’? (No! it is every believers priveledge and duty)

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both? (Both)

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people?

(For me personally, I desire to help each believer find his of her spiritual gifts, develop them, and use them. I take a lot of people into

Gospel experiences. Doing is very important to me. Prayer, meditation on Gods word, and building a loving community are some of our goals.)

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into?

Strong on worship, evangelism, spiritual giftings, teaching, need to grow greater into corporate prayer, and "getting out of the box."

My name is Richard Paradise, I am the pastor/elder over outreach both local and foreign.

Dear pastor/elder,

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible?
Yes..We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God.
2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?
Yes...but not only is He Lord but also our only Savior
3. Do you currently have a men's bible study that meets once a week?
We currently meet once a month..We are a new ministry looking for people who are exciting about and love Jesus Christ and want to make a difference in this world. Our women also meet.
4. Do you publicly preach out on the streets on a regular basis?
No I don't, but I believe I have a responsibility to raise up and equip people to take the Gospel to the four corners of the world.
5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ?
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes
6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel?
Every believer is a minister of Jesus Christ and are responsible for preaching the Gospel. Remember the word preach means "to proclaim" and the word minister mean "to serve". We are all to serve and proclaim the "Good News"

To equip people to fulfill the purpose God has for each of their lives and make an impact in this dark world. We are called to be salt..Salt makes a difference to everything it touches.

Hello Steven,

I will give you some quick answers to your questions. I hope and pray God directs you to the local church where he wants you planted. I am sure you understand that there really is no "perfect" local church. Because all churches are made up of people in the process of sanctification. I feel Friends Church is a good church filled with people who love Jesus Christ. From your questions, it sounds as if you are looking for a certain type/style of ministry. As for whether we are Christ centered and Bible based, that is sure. Whether we fit your model of how the church best functions, that may be another thing. I would invite you to come and see.

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible?

Yes. I teach and preach expositionally and topically from the Bible. I value the need to communicate to people the word of God relevantly and through God's leading. This is an evangelical Friends Church. We value the present day ministry of the Spirit of God as well as the word of God as our authority.

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?

Yes. He is the only way of salvation.

3. Do you currently have a men’s bible study that meets once a week?

We do not currently have a weekly men's bible study. We have 8 groups weekly for couples, singles and women but do not currently have a Men's group.

4. Do you publicly preach out on the streets on a regular basis?

If you are asking If I personally witness in my everyday walk with Christ, I would say yes, most definitely. If you are asking If I regularly go to public places and begin preaching in hope that people will come and listen, No I do not do that. I believe that communicating the word of God is critical part of the Christian church but those means of evangelism are quite in-effective in getting conversions as well as true disciples. I am more interested in making disciples than just getting conversions. As a church we design our ministries and events to help people make commitments to Christ that last.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ?

As senior pastor, I view preaching Christ and Him crucified as my most critical role.

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel?

I believe evangelism doesn't just happen. The church should be very purposeful about reaching our friends, co-workers, families and communities with the Love of Christ.

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are ‘evangelists’?

No. We are all to do the "work" of an evangelist.

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both?

Both. I usually teach through books of the bible about 1/2 of the time and the other time do topical studies on biblical themes.

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people?

Eph. 4 - The fullness of Christ

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into?

I Don't understand the question.

Friends Church <chfc@jps.net>

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible? Yes we do. In fact some have "accused" us of studying the bible during Sunday Service. We go through the bible verse by verse chp by chp until we finish a book. this happens on Sunday and Wed evening.

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? Yes

3. Do you currently have a men’’s bible study that meets once a week? Once every other week with a men's breakfast one Saturday a month.

4. Do you publically preach out on the streets on a regular basis? We do have street witnessing.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ? Yes

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel? Yes

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are ‘‘evangelists’’? No

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both? Mostly verse by berse

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people? Feed care and love them.

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into? Sorry not sure what question is asking.

Ken Robillard <kenrob@thegrid.net

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible? Yes.

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? Yes.

3. Do you currently have a men’’s bible study that meets once a week? No, we have a men's group meeting once a month for a breakfast/devotional and once a month for bike riding.

4. Do you publically preach out on the streets on a regular basis? No.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ? Yes.

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel? It is our responsibility to so live our lives before men that they can sense his love and care for them. It is also our responsibility to develop relationships with them and to share the gospel with them.

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are ‘‘evangelists’’? It depends upon your definition of the word "evangelist." If we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we need to share that with others.

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both? both

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people? To reach them where they are and to present God's love to them in a way that they can understand.

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into? I don't understand this question.

Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you. I'll try to answer each question a clearly as possible;

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible?

Absolutely - is there any other real way to preach?

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?

Well, this is kind of an open ended question. I'm not sure exactly in what sense you are asking the question, so I'll give a couple of answers....

First, I, my church and my denomination believe that Jesus Christ is the third person of the trinity, that He is both fully God and fully man. That He is distinct from the other two persons of the trinity, but not separate from them - and that together they are they only true and living God.

Second, I, my church and my denomination believe that Christ is Lord of the Church - which is comprised of all who truly believe, regardless of denominational or church affliation.

Third, and a very personal level - Jesus is Lord of my life. By His grace I endeavor to live as He wills, not as I might will.

3. Do you currently have a men’s bible study that meets once a week?

No, at this point we are very small and have only one midweek Bible Study.

4. Do you publically preach out on the streets on a regular basis?

No, not because there is anything wrong with doing so, but because in our area it would simply not connect with the people.

I do spend much time building relationships outside the church and seeking opportunities to share Christ.

We recently spent several months seeking God's will, God's plan for our church. The Lord clearly revealed to us that the primary way that we are to reach out is by showing the love of Christ both inside and outside the church. We do this in a variety of ways - such as operating an adult day care for seniors and a Christ centered chronic pain support group. These and other efforts have opened doors for us to share the Gospel - both inside and outside the church services.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ?

Absolutely. I myself was raised outside the church and understand very well what it is like to be lost.

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel?

It is clearly our responsibility to PROCLAIM the Gospel. A primary way that this is done is through preaching. However this is not the only way - nor do I believe it is the most effective way - by it self - to proclaim the Gospel.

50 years ago, our culture was Christian. Most people had gone to church and knew the Bible - even if they didn't know Jesus. Most - not all, but most - people believed that the Bible and Christianity were true. They also looked up to Christians and Christian leaders.

Sadly, our culture is no longer Christian. Most people now believe that the Bible and Christianity to be untrue and irrelevant. They believe that Christians are mean spirited and hateful. They are also biblically ignorant.

Just as a missionary going to a nation that has little knowledge of Christ must understand they culture, we must understand our culture. We must work, by God's grace, to reverse the conditions above, one life at a time. We believe that we have been called to do that by first showing the Love of Christ, then showing by our lives and through the life of our church how relevant Christ is to the human condition, and at the same time teaching them enough from the Word to provide a basis for sharing the Gospel. The latter includes the clear proclamation of the Gospel message - from the puplit, during bible Study's and support groups, and one on one.

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are ‘evangelists’?

No. It is the responsibility of every Christian to share the Gospel. In addition, one of our core values is that one need not be ordained to preach.

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both?

Both - but primarily topically. My topical preaching will typically center on one passage and expound on it - but I do sometimes center each point on a text, or reference a related text. I believe that context is very important and that the context for all scripture is - all scripture.

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people?

My passion for the people the Lord has placed under my care is that they grow into the people God wants them to be. That they constantly grow in Christ, becoming more and more like Him - in Holiness and in Love.

That they will live out their lives IN the world without being OF it. This is perhaps my greatest passion. I see most Christians withdrawing from the world - having no friends outside the church, no involvement in morally acceptable activities in the community - and no real contact with unbelievers. The sad thing is that having withdrawn from the world, they then behave in most ways like they are a part of it. Their priorities are worldly and their lives reflect it. Their morals are worldly, and their lives reflect it. They don't take a stand for Christ in the Church - much less in the world.

My passion is best summed up in these verses:

(1 Pet 2:11 NIV) Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.
(1 Pet 2:12 NIV) Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

My passion is to see my people living transformed, Godly lives in the world and among the pagans - for it is in this way that we bring glory to God and see people brought to faith.

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into?

Assuming you are talking about attendance - we are very small - about 20-25 on Sunday mornings.

I hope I have been able to answer your questions. Citrus Heights is a bit far, but you are welcome to come check us out any time.

May the Lord guide and bless you as you search for a church home!

Vince Warde <pastor@celebrationchurch.com>

Thank you for the note. My name is Leonard Lee and I am the Senior Pastor of Grace Center. I will take a few minutes to answer some of the questions you ask.

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible?

Yes. We are currently studying through the book of Acts. We began the series in January and will finish before Easter 2003.

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?

Absolutely!

3. Do you currently have a men’s bible study that meets once a week?

We are starting one in September. Our men’s ministry is mostly about Discipleship.

4. Do you publicly preach out on the streets on a regular basis?

No I do not but I am active in personally sharing the Gospel with others.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ?

Yes, I was a missionary for nearly 11 years.

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel?

Absolutely!

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are ‘‘evangelists’’?

No, it is for those who know Christ.

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both?

I don’’t do either. I preach in what is called a textually narrative style. This means I teach textually where ever I might be in the Scriptures. It also means that I will both exposit and when there is one narrate the story within the text. It is closer to expository than topical.

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people?

To see the Body of Christ become united primarily by Christ and as such to discover their gifts and calling from God in order to share Christ with all that we meet along the way.

Forgive me but I do not understand question 10. I am answering you because you asked and I had some time to do so. Thanks for asking and I hope you have been encouraged.

Dear Steve
Thank you for writing me. I would agree with you that the church as a hole
seem to becoming more and more worldly and not set apart for Him. One of my
passions in that the church would not live with preferance but preference! I
think that there are to many pastor that preach for the offering and the
crowds. I preach the bible, and I believe that Jesus is Lord. We are a new
church plant in Grante bay. We have just got a new building that was a old
church for 50 years, and are now meeting in it. We are trying to start up
many new ministries, one being a men's group. One of my passions is for
outreach, and I preach to my church that we ARE the light, and we have a
responsibility to reach people for Christ. I preach both topical and verse
by verse. Well I hope this helps you, may you have a great day, and keep
your eyes on HIM JESUS!
May God grant you favor.

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into? I'm not sure I understand this question.

It was good to read from you and I will make an attempt to answer your questions. I trust that the Lord will confirm the right
answers in your heart. My wife and I pastor Livingspring Christian Ctr in Sacramento. Although we live in Citrus Heights, St Andrews
Ct., our church meets at the Broadway Playhouse in Carmichael on Sundays. We also have home bible study grp mtg in our hse on
Mondays at 7pm. If you are interested, just give me a call on my cell phone # 203-6386. Livingspring is a young church that will be
2 years in Sept. We are on a growing path!

To your questions:

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible? Absolutely. I preach from the word of God because it is the ONLY message that can
transform us. I also gain insights from other ministers thru their writings, messages, or songs.

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? Absolutely. For there is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved.

3. Do you currently have a men's bible study that meets once a week? We have a men's grp that meets to play soccer every 2 weeks
using that as an outreach opportunity. We do not yet meet for bible study regularly but this is one of our priorities.

4. Do you publicly preach out on the streets on a regular basis? Our next objective as a church is to reach out to the homes on the
streets of our community in Carmichael. We hope to accomplish this. We are desperately looking for someone whom God has gifted
with this anointing to lead us in this area. Pls pray for us. But yes it is a priority on our hearts.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ? Oh, brother! Yes! The gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation!

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel? We have no other major priority than to minister the good
news to all men: in church, in the market place, in our offices and neiighborhoods

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are 'evangelists'? No. Jesus said: go ye into the world and preach
the gospel to all creation. we are all called to minister.

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both? I preach as led by the Spirit of God. It could be topically or by character
study. As long as the message transforms people, I am not bothered abt the method.

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people? To teach people excellence, develop a passion in the people for God. I want
people's broken hopes restored and that they may become champions in the kingdom of God. I want them to become like me in my passion for Christ.

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into? I dont understand this question but if it is about how well
are we fulfilling the plan of God for us, I will say that "the best is yet to come" and that we are on our way to realizing the
plans of God as he unfolds them. I will say we've gone beyond 50%.

Love you brother. Hope this helps. God bless you and yours!

Steven,

Hello and thanks for your interest in our church. Let me go through your questions and answer as completely as I can. However, let me say in advance that sometimes answers like this are not easily communicated in an email and so if you have any further questions please feel free to give me a call also. Having said that, here goes...

1. Do you teach and preach from the Bible?

Absolutely. We generally work through books of the Bible. We have gone through Ephesians, I John, and parts of Psalms so far this year. During the service we hand out Bibles to anyone who doesn't have one already and we read through the passages together. In between our book studies we do look at different subjects, but it is not traditional topical preaching in that we don't just bounce around the Bible. So, for example we recently looked at what the ingredients are for a healthy church and studied Acts 2:42.

2. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord?

Yes. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I am not sure if you are asking more here though?

3. Do you currently have a men’s bible study that meets once a week?

Yes. Our men's small group Bible study meets Tuesday mornings at 6:30 AM at Lyon's Restaurant here in Folsom.

4. Do you publicly preach out on the streets on a regular basis?

No. Our strategy is to love people one at a time and so we ask each person in our church to pray about someone that God would lead them to in their sphere of influence to share his love with. We encourage people to invite friends to "come and see" in the same way that Andrew invited Peter to come and see Jesus for himself. I have found that most people in our culture do not respond well to cold call discussions with strangers on the street. They are uncomfortable with the method regardless of what the message is.

5. Do you have a passion for the gospel of Christ?

Yes. We share the gospel and offer an invitation for someone to respond in our services just about every single week.

6. Do you think that it is our responsibility to preach the gospel?

Yes. We believe the great commission applies today. Our mission is to let God love us and love others through us and a part of this is sharing the good news!

7. Is the preaching the gospel of Christ exclusively for those who are ‘evangelists’?

No. While some may have the gift of evangelism we are all called to the ministry of reconciliation described in 2 Corinthians 5:19-20.

8. Do you preach topically, verse by verse or both?

As described we do preach verse by verse through books of the Bible, though we may pick individual passages from time to time also.

9. What passion has God put in your heart for His people?

To love them like I would members of my own family. Each person I meet is someone's son or daughter and so I treat them in the same way that I would want my son or daughter treated. I try to live according to I Thessalonians 2:11-12 by encouraging, comforting, and urging the people in our church to live lives worthy of God.

10. What percentage of ministry, from 1-100, does your church fit into?

I am not sure what you are asking here? Are you asking how many people are involved in ministry?

I hope this helps to give you some insight into our church. If you would like, I would be happy to get together with you sometime for lunch or coffee to talk these things over in person. I sense because of the specific nature of some of these questions that you might have had a bad experience with a church regarding these issues? I am not sure if New Song is a good fit for you and your family but would be happy to talk with you in person to get to know you better and answer any further questions you have. Please give me a call if you are interested and we can set up a time to get together.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Dale

I Don't understand the question. chfc@jps.net
